Winter Wonderland
With the days getting shorter and temperature getting cooler, we might be feeling a bit lack-lustre and chilly this wintertime. But help may be at hand as Julie Lamble nutritionist recommends her favourite supplements to see us through the winter period…………

| Immune boosters |
|
Our immunity can be compromised by the cold weather, making us more vunerable to catching infections. One good way in maintaining a healthy immune system is to take Echinacea, since this herb has been shown to modulate killer T cells, which are types of white blood cells that attack viruses. Try Echinacea Time Release 1000mg tablets, which provide a high level of the active constituents, polyphenols.
Aloe vera a plant which has been shown in studies to activate white blood cells, stimulate communication between immune cells and stimulate bone marrow activity.
Try a capful of Aloe Vera Juice daily, which contains a guaranteed 10% polysaccharides- the active constituents in this product. This product is made using the highest grade aloe vera juice, which is carefully processed to retain all of the actives.

| Stomach soothers |
If you have tucked into too many minces pies and drank to much mulled wine this Christmas then you might wish to take a little something to settle your stomach. I would suggest a good dose of manuka honey each day, which helps to neutralise stomach acid and also has antibacterial properties. Take one teaspoon of Goldenhills Manuka Honey UMF 10+, straight of the spoon or mixed into your favourite drink, three times daily to ease discomfort. Likewise Kiwiherb Ginger and Kawa Kawa, a pleasant tasting syrup contains natural plant extracts which help to warm you up and to calm an overactive digestive tract. Add a little to warm water and sip for a refreshing and revitalising tonic.

| Blood flowers |
|
The cold weather can play havoc with our circulation, especially to our extremities.
Therefore why not try the herbal product Ginkgo Biloba, which provides powerful antioxidants to help promote blood flow to the fingers and toes as well as to the brain! Try Gingko Biloba capsules, providing 120mg of ginkgo biloba extract of which 24% ginkgo flavonglycosides to aid your circulation. The product also contains Rutin and Vitamin E which helps to maintain healthy blood vessels and support the heart.
Alternatively, an extract of pine bark can help to strengthen blood vessels and promote blood flow. Try Pine Bark Extract providing 5000mg of fresh pine bark, once daily.

| Beat the Blues |
If you are feeling down this winter, it could be due to Seasonal Defective Disorder, which is a depressive disorder caused by a lack of sunlight.
I would suggest Vitamin D, as this is the vitamin obtained through sunlight, and helps to maintain healthy serotonin levels which have an important role in our mood. Take Vitamin D 400iu tablets, once daily to keep your levels topped up throughout the winter. Likewise 5HTP a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan can help to regulate sleep and improve mood too. Take two of these tablets 30 minutes before bedtime for a refreshing sleep.
