Lecithin
With more people concerned about looking after their hearts and brain, Lecithin has become an extremely popular supplement.

Lecithin is a naturally occurring mixture of compounds called phospholipids, which have many important roles in the body. It is a key building block of cell membranes and protects cells from oxidation. It largely comprises the protective sheaths surrounding the brain. Being an emulsifier, Lecithin helps to keep cholesterol more soluble and assist the process of fat metabolism in the liver. It is also a precursor to acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter vital for the transmission of messages between the brain cells.

Lecithin is usually taken by people who have high cholesterol or high homocysteine levels. It may also be useful for those with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Vitamin D
With an increasing number of people concerned about the damage to their skin the sun can cause, people may be at risk from low levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which plays an important role in the maintenance of several organ systems in the body. The most active form of the vitamin is vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol, which is produced in skin exposed to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B radiation and in small amounts from animal sources.

Vitamin D is important for maintaining blood levels of calcium in the body. It can achieve this by increasing the uptake of intestinal calcium and also by reducing calcium loss. In doing this, it helps form and maintain strong bones.

Research also suggests that Vitamin D may help maintain a healthy immune system and help regulate cell growth and differentiation, the process that determines what a cell is to become (Holick 2003;164:3-28).

Vitamin D is usually taken by people to promote or help prevent bone loss, such as people with Osteomalacia or Osteoporosis, by people who are not exposed to much sunlight, vegans and vegetarians or people who may have impaired immune function such as the elderly and the sick.
